The 1970s were an incredibly transformative time period for the United States as a nation. The decade was encapsulated in the anti-war movement, in which people were actively protesting the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. Slogans like “Keep Our Black Warriors Out of the Draft.” At the same time, you had advancements in technology like the invention of the microprocessor, floppy disk, VHS, and Atari (Pong). The fight for women’s rights culminated in the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment by Congress in 1972; the amendment would have guaranteed equal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex. While that was happening, you had the Cold War looming in the background, movies like The Godfather, Jaws, and Star Wars. This was the subtext that North Carolina Agricultural & Technical University’s students were living in and experiencing college in. This archive is a sampling of newspapers, photos, oral histories, and videos.

PROJECT GOALS

1. Contextualize the student experience using digitized archival materials.
2. Provide the public with a sampling of the University Archive’s materials.
3. As a use case for Digital Commons Exhibits.
