Abstract
Ruminants play a vital role in agricultural production due to their unique four-compartment stomach, which allows them to efficiently digest fibrous plant materials and utilize nutrients in those plant-based feedstuffs. Because of their complex digestive process, proper nutrition is essential to support reproduction, growth, milk production, and overall performance. As livestock farmers increasingly seek sustainable feed resources, bamboo has emerged as a promising option. Even though bamboo is a promising alternative, there is little information on the use of bamboo as an inexpensive feed resource in ruminant animal production. This research inquiry focuses on the use of bamboo and its derivatives in the nutrition of ruminants for sustainable production and the environment. This inquiry synthesizes findings from peer‑reviewed studies accessed through Google Scholar, ProQuest, and PubMed to evaluate the potential of bamboo and its products in ruminant diets. The research highlighted the benefits of bamboo when it is incorporated into ruminants’ diets. Incorporating bamboo leaves can provide crude protein levels of 12.5-14.5% and high dry matter content of 91.7-92.0% in goat diets, demonstrating its value as a nutrient‑rich forage. Bamboo inclusion had substantial reductions in enteric methane emissions ranging from 29-62%, highlighting its relevance for climate‑smart livestock production. These findings emphasize bamboo’s potential as a sustainable, cost‑effective feed resource capable of enhancing ruminant productivity while mitigating environmental impacts. Greater awareness, continued research, and practical integration of bamboo into feeding systems could significantly advance both sustainable production and environmental stewardship within the ruminant sector.
