Abstract

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has a rich history leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for science starting in the 1970s. ORNL is now at the forefront of AI research and development, leveraging some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world to solve urgent science and national security challenges. Global AI competition is fierce, and the national laboratories have a unique role to play, including the development of trustworthy, secure, and energy efficient AI technologies. This talk will review ORNL’s history in AI research, describe where the Department of Energy and the national labs fit into the national AI strategy, and provide an overview of ORNL’s unique capabilities to develop AI solutions for scientific discovery, autonomous laboratories, and national security. The presentation will put special emphasis on potential collaboration opportunities with universities such as NC A&T, as such partnerships are essential for revolutionary AI R&D and the development of our next-generation AI workforce.
