Abstract
Summer vacation, a time of excitement and joy, often leads to the loss of critical reading skills, especially for disadvantaged students. Summer reading programs are often utilized to combat this loss. This article describes an exploratory summer literacy program provided to a group of fourth graders by three Delta Kappa Gamma members with the goals of preventing the loss of critical literacy skills and encouraging excitement about reading. A packet of books to call their own, a magazine subscription to take home, and a 2-day summer camp adventure helped combat reading slide for students.
