Description

Poster presented at the International Conference on Urban Education in Cancun, Mexico

This research poster examined how negative and positive words impact emotional and mental identity in young black boys. The researcher examined literature that focused on participants’ personal anecdotes to understand the realities their young black boys faced, and some literature assessed the science behind the impact of word choice. People’s decisions and identities can all be affected by the language we consume daily. To survive, black males must develop an identity in a world where they are simultaneously loved and hated, where they are consuming the positive and negative stereotypes, perceptions and unbeknownst to them the words (Cooper, 2013; Stevenson, 1997). This article analysis is based on data from multiple research papers that investigated the power of words and examined the varying realities and hurdles young black boys face and manage from birth.
