Principles of Geography

This course is a survey of the geography of the natural world and of ways of describing, recording, and analyzing surface processes on Earth. Emphasis is placed on those characteristics of the surface of Earth that are physical in nature such as landforms, climate, vegetation, and soils, and on how the spatial patterns and interactions of these characteristics vary globally. The course provides a conceptual framework, factual information, and skills which are invaluable in training teachers and students in other disciplines. Education majors enrolled in this course will find that it helps prepare professional educators who are catalysts for learning.

Research Methods I

This course reviews the design and implementation of empirical research in sociology with an emphasis on mixed-methods research, including quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. This course examines the logic of social inquiry and the uses and problems of various research designs and methods of data collection. Particular emphasis is on analysis of available secondary data, survey data, and interview data. Social Statistics II

This course continues the introduction to basic statistical reasoning, practices, and procedures that began in SOCI 203 Social Statistics I. We will cover topics such as descriptive statistics, statistical null- hypothesis testing, chi-square tests, independent and dependent samples t-test, correlational analysis, and one-way and two-way analysis of variance. We will also learn how to perform these statistical tests using the statistical computing software program SPSS. Throughout the course, we will emphasize the value that statistical analysis offers to our attempts to address real-world social problems.

Social Work with Individuals

In this course, students are introduced to the mission, philosophy, values, and ethics of the social work profession which will inform their practice with all client systems. The specific focus of this course is direct practice with individuals. Thus, students will learn competencies in interviewing and interpersonal helping skills; conducting psychosocial assessments; selecting appropriate intervention approaches based on client goals, problems, and strengths; and implementing those interventions. Students will acquire beginning competency in the following intervention approaches: problem solving approach, cognitive-behavioral approach, solution-focused approach, and motivational interviewing. Students will also develop beginning competency in the evaluation of practice in relation to each practice theory they study. Throughout this course, students are challenged to use critical thinking and take into account their own affective reactions, especially when addressing ethical issues and working with clients whose background or characteristics may be different from their own. Effective oral and written communication and application of the CSWE competencies necessary for professional practice are stressed in this course. This is one of the practice courses provided in the first year of the JMSW curriculum. This course, in combination with SOWK/SWK 623, Social Work with Groups, and SOWK/SWK 609, Family Theory and Intervention, provides the underlying direct practice theories that will inform students’ practice during their generalist internship.
